Hi, my name is Mareen. 

I’m a multidisciplinary designer working at the intersection of ecology, craft and technology exploring how the intelligence of matter itself can guide design to unlock potentials in materials, production processes and value chains.

My practice is driven by researching materials and their manufacturing processes. I investigate the economical, ecological, social and political forces embedded in materials, and use design as a tool for regeneration – of processes, landscapes and cultural knowledge. I develop not only materials, but also new ways of making for (underestimated) resources. Often, I turn to traditional craft techniques, translating them into new methods to unlock overlooked potentials. In this interplay of hand and tool, material histories become futures. 

I hold a bachelor’s degree in Interior Architecture from Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences and Arts and a master’s degree in Product Design from Weißensee Academy of Art and Design Berlin. 

In addition to working on my own projects, I am working as a research associate at greenlab – laboratory for sustainable design strategies, an interdisciplinary project at Weißensee Academy of Art and Design in Berlin, where I teach in the departments of product design and textile & material design.
